Movie: House On Skull Mountain

Long before Governor Nathan Deal sweetened the tax credit in 2008 by offering up to 30 percent tax credits to productions with beefy budgets, making Georgia a hotbed for movie production, films and TV shows were already being made in Georgia.

In 1974, House On Skull Mountain was filmed right here in Atlanta, mostly at Callanwolde The most familiar faces in the movie are probably Mike Evans, the original Lionel from All In The Family and The Jeffersons and Victor French from Little House On The Prairie.

Callanwolde was built in 1920 by Charles Howard Candler, eldest son of The Coca-Cola Company founder Asa Griggs Candler. The estate is located in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Callanwolde is owned by DeKalb County and is the home of the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is a cultural community conservatory of the arts on a 12 acre campus. Callanwolde offers classes in the performing arts (music, music recording, dance, dance fitness), visual arts (painting/drawing, pottery, weaving/textiles, jewelry/metalsmithing, photography), writing, yoga, horticulture, culinary arts and more to students of all ages. Callanwolde also serves as a popular destination for weddings and private events and is known for its concerts and community events as well.

Ex-"Gunsmoke" producer Honthaner was hired by a group of black Atlanta businessmen to direct this blaxploitation (black exploitation) film. It was made by 20th Century-Fox ("A Chocolate Chip & Pinto Production", according to the credits), and it should be noted that during the period this movie was made, the studio made several movies that were originally made for television, but then released to theaters.

The movie is about four cousins who have never met are invited by their Great-Grandmother Christophe to visit her mansion outside of Atlanta. When they arrive, they learn she has just died. They stay to hear the reading of her will and soon are being killed off one-by-one with voodoo magic. The survivors try to find the killer before he finishes them all off.
